Model 1 is implemented when the school is closed due to a local or national lockdown.

We teach the same curriculum remotely as is delivered in school - wherever possible and appropriate – with the exception of a number of adaptations in subjects, such as Music, PE, Art, DT, and PSHE.  With Music, for example, children are unable to learn to play an instrument at home if they do not have access to the instrument. The remote lessons, where adaptations are made, will focus on the knowledge taught in that year group/unit of work.  These adaptations allow all students to engage with these subjects without being limited by their access to subject-specific school-based equipment.

The following points ensure Remote Education is effective and completed to the expected standard:

  • All children must complete work in their exercise books or workbooks (White Rose, RWI).
  • Work in exercise books must be dated and titled with the subject and the aim of the lesson.
  • Children must upload all evidence of completed work to their Google Classroom each day.
  • If children have not completed their work, parents will be contacted.

Why pre-recorded lessons?

Research into Remote Education shows that the quality of teaching is far more important than how the lesson is delivered.

One of the biggest advantages of pre-recorded lessons is accessibility. In many homes, there are not sufficient/suitable devices for all children in the household to access lessons at the same time. One laptop cannot serve three children who all have live lessons simultaneously, but it might give access to lessons available on demand.  In some households, parents/carers may be working from home and need to schedule their child’s remote learning around their own meetings and work commitments.  If the lessons were live, children may miss some or all of their lessons.

Pre-recorded lessons can support children with learning and completing tasks more successfully, by offering the ability to pause, rewind and revisit explanations or content they have struggled with.  This can also develop pupils’ independence, encouraging them to pause, to rewind and to manage their time.

An issue with recorded lessons is that children can miss out on connectedness of interacting with their teachers and peers.  We have addressed this by timetabling a live check-in session every morning to ensure children have a daily opportunity to connect with their peers and teachers. There is also a live year group assembly each week.  Any live sessions are timetabled, and the timings staggered, in order to ensure that children sharing a device can access all their live sessions.
